Background
Mackay Sugar faced the same issue each year of
tying up valuable resources to induct its 400 - 500 strong
seasonal workforce for the “Crushing Season”, followed by the
multitude of sub contractors for maintenance work throughout
the remainder of the year. All this effort undertaken, plus a
permanent workforce that still had to be catered for.
The Solution
Smart HR Solutions (SHS) developed, implemented, and now
manage an online induction system to cater for all inductions
required by Mackay Sugar. To add even more flexibility for the
client, SHS facilitate these inductions at a location off site,
5 days per week. This flexibility allows all inductees ample
opportunity to complete their inductions at a time suitable for
them.
An added bonus was to include the induction as part of the
compulsory pre employment process for seasonal workers, for
example, must pass pre employment medical, must pass
induction etc. This resulted in a considerable saving to Mackay
Sugar with regards to wages, as this process was undertaken in
the individuals own time.
The Result
Again, all content and assessment involved at this level of
induction is delivered in an eLearning manner, providing
consistent delivery, immediate assessment, and instant
recording of completion information directly to the database.
This database now becomes a valuable library of information
from which to run mission critical reports from.
At its peak, SHS have been able to induct approximately 400
people in a two week window, at a time suitable for each
individual. Trying to undertake this task manually would no
doubt prove to be a logistical nightmare.
Positive feedback over the ongoing life of this project,
suggests strongly that SHS has left a sweet taste in the mouths
of many with regards to Mackay Sugar inductions.
